Abstract

1398007 Pulverulent fuel burners VICTORIA STATE ELECTRICITY COMMISSION OF 8 Dec 1972 [9 Dec 1971] 56665/72 Heading F4T [Also in Division B2] Pulverized coal particles fed in an entraining vapour stream to a boiler furnace are segregated to the outer region of the stream by causing the stream to flow with substantially a potential vortex swirl about a straight vortex axis and with movement parallel to the axis so that the particles tend to be thrown out to the outer region of the stream and dividing an inner part of the stream from those particles in the outer region of the stream. As shown in Fig. 4, a burner and vortex separator combination 40 is mounted in a boiler furnace wall 41. Fuel particles and vapour enter a swirling stream at the end 44 of the duet defined between conical walls 42 and 43 of the separator from a contracting inlet (not shown). The burner end has a refractory nose 45 shaped to provide a return passage 46 through which fuel-lean vapour is drawn from the inner region of the stream in the separator duct and discharged to waste through a central tube 47. Straightening vanes 48 provide pressure recovery of the swirl energy in the waste vapour. The particle-enriched portion of the stream passes from the duct with swirling motion and is mixed with secondary air from a manifold 49 as it discharges directly into the furnace for combustion.
