Abstract

1397473 Storage cell electrodes SAFT-SOC DES ACCUMULATEURS FIXES ET DE TRACTION 26 March 1973 [29 June 1972] 14374/73 Heading H1B An electrode for an electrochemical storage cell, e.g. of the nickel-cadmium or nickel-iron type, comprises parallel, elongate metallic cases filled with an active mass and fixed at at least one end to an electrically conductive support strip which is sufficiently flexible as to permit bending or folding of the support with the metallic cores affixed thereto. As shown, rows of filled metallic cases 5, 6 and 7 are welded at both ends to respective flexible metallic support strips 8, 9, 10 and 16 Adjacent metallic cases in a row are spaced from each other to facilitate the winding of the electrode into a spiral or polygonal, e.g. square, shape, Figs. 7 and 8 (not shown), and the spacing between adjacent metallic cases may vary for different groups of electrodes defining, when wound, different layers of the assembly. Alternatively, Fig. 9 (not shown), the electrode may be folded in a concertina configuration. The metallic electrode cases may be circular, ellipitcal, square or rectangular in cross-section. In an example a nickelcadmium storage cell has positive electrode cases filled with nickel hydroxide and graphite and negative electrode cases filled with cadmium hydroxide and magnetic iron oxide, the cases being welded to two flexible nickel steel sheet support strips. The cell is assembled by winding the electrodes separated by a corrugated polyvinyl chloride separator. The assembly together with an electrolyte comprising a solution of potassium hydroxide and lithium hydroxide is disposed within a cylindrical nickel steel housing. Dimensions of the example are given.
