Abstract

1397442 Stabilized chrome yellow HOECHST AG 24 May 1972 [2 June 1971] 24498/72 Heading C1A [Also in Division C4] Orthorhombic chrome yellow or tetragonal molybdate red of stable crystal phase are produced by mixing a solution of a lead salt with a soluble metal salt which produces an insoluble phosphate on reaction with phosphoric acid or a soluble phosphoric acid salt, precipitating the pigment by adding a chromate with or without a sulphate and molybdate in addition, adding phosphoric acid or a soluble phosphoric acid salt in an amount equivalent to the soluble metal salt to the pigment suspension obtained, and adjusting the suspension to neutral. In a modification an excess of the lead salt is used instead of the mixture of lead salt and soluble metal salt. Preferably the soluble metal salt is one of Zn, Mg of Ce, and the amount of metal phosphate applied by precipitation is 0À1-8% by wt. of the chrome yellow or molybdate red. In Example 1 aqueous solutions of lead nitrate, zinc oxide and nitric acid are mixed, and an aqueous solution of sodium bichromate and ammonium sulphate is added thereto. Aqueous soda is added followed by phosphoric acid, and further soda to adjust the pH to 7À5, the pigment then being filter washed and dried. The zinc oxide can be replaced magnesium oxide cerium chloride or merely a larger amount of lead nitrate. In Example 2 molybdate red is prepared using an excess of lead nitrate and when the desired shade of the tetragonal phase is reached a solution of Na 2 HPO 4 .12H 2 O is added the pigment then being neutralized and washed. The pigment suspension produced could then be treated with sodium silicate and an antimony and solution in a known method.
