1397346 Electromagnets SEIKOSHA KK 5 Feb 1973 [8 Feb 1972] 5580/73 Heading H1P [Also in Divisions B6 and H3] A magnetically operated driving device for a printer or punching machine comprises (Figs. 1, 2) a wire drive carriage 1 axially movable by a worm 3 mounted on case 2, with mounted on the carriage magnetizable yoke members 5, 5a separated by a permanent or electromagnet 4 which extend along the full range of carriage movement. Permanent magnets may replace the yoke members. On a shaft 7 of the carriage are pivoted plural cores 8 integral with levers 9 at right angles thereto, the cores axially traversing bores of solenoid bobbins 10 alternately placed on opposite sides of the shaft, so that the free 'ends are disposed between the ends of the yokes 5, 5a which carry non-magnetic spacers or stops 6, 6a preventing direct contact. A plate of the carriage, extending towards the platen 14, is apertured to pass levers 9 to engage slidable spring biased pins 17 connected to wires 16 sliding in arcuate guide plates 21, 22 and guide block 23, so that their distal ends are aligned vertically opposite paper 24, ink ribbon 25, and platen 14. Thus on selective energization of the coils the appropriate lever 9 rocks due to movement of core 9 so as to protrude the distal end of the appropriate wire 16 and print a dot on the paper. Thereafter energization is reversed to withdraw the wire. The carriage is moved intermittently between prints, and the coils are respectively excited by a transistor circuit (Fig. 3, not shown) pulsing the respective ends in opposite directions in response to corresponding input pulses. A modified driving device (Fig. 4, not shown) comprisies a supplementary core mounted parallel to the core passing through the coil and integral with the pivoted drive lever, which is attracted or repelled by the outer surface of one of the magnetizable yokes to increase the driving power.
