Abstract

1397314 Hydrazo compounds HOECHST AG 14 Aug 1972 [14 Aug 1971] 37845/72 Heading C2C Aromatic hydrazo compounds are prepared by continuously introducing a solution of an aromatic nitro compound in an inert organic solvent, an aqueous solution of an alkali metal hydroxide and zinc dust into the first stage of a cascade apparatus comprising at least four stages, and continuously introducing water and zinc dust into the third stage of the apparatus, the amount of zinc dust introduced into the first stage being from 70 to 95% by weight of the total amount introduced and the temperature of each stage being maintained at 70 to 90‹ C. In examples, 2,2<SP>1</SP>-dichlorohydrazobenzene, 2,2<SP>1</SP>- dimethoxyhydrazobenzene and 2,2<SP>1</SP>-dimethylhydrazobenzene are prepared from o-nitrochlorobenzene, o-nitroanisole and o-nitrotoluene, respectively. The products may be rearranged to the corresponding benzidines.
