1397185 Tumbling DR-ING MANFRID DREHER KG 9 Feb 1973 [9 Feb 1972] 6478/73 Heading B3D An arrangement for the surface treatment of metal articles comprises at least one drum 29 for receiving the articles and a treating medium, a transport device 24 for delivering the drum to a device 20 for filling and emptying the drum, and a closable flap of the delivered drum being associated with means for closing the flap, cooperating with a stop 238 on the frame of the filling and emptying device to release the flap during rotation of the drum and being activated by an actuating device 268 for locking the flap in the closed position. As described, the arrangement consists of a plurality of units 30, 32, 34, 36, 38, each of which has a pair of supporting rollers 42, 44 for engaging wheels 46, 48 on the ends of a respective drum 29, one of each pair of rollers being driven to rotate its associated drum. Each drum is connected by pivot pins 50 to a frame 52 which can be lifted by a travelling crab 74 movable along rails 70, 72 to carry the drum to a position above the control device 20. A frame 80 has vertical guide rails 76, 78 along which a lifting cart 82 is movable to deposit the drum into the control device which has means for rotating the drum. The body of the drum has the closable flap 180 which is mounted on hinges 182. The flap has pins 202 which are engaged by closing levers 190 of closing devices 184, the levers being pivotally mounted on plates 188 secured to supporting plates 186 carried by the drum body. The closing levers move against torsion springs 192 and are retained in their closed position by locking levers 196 movable against torsion springs 194 and having lobes 198 for engaging the closing levers. The closing devices 184 are associated with actuating device on the housing 26 of the filling and emptying device. Each actuating device has an angled lever 208 movable about a pivot 210 on a lever 212 by a cylinder unit 224, the lever 212 being movable against a spring about an axle 214 by a cylinder unit 218. The lever 208 can be advanced by the unit 224 to engage the locking lever 196 which is then moved by the unit 218 to pivot the closing lever into its closed position. The drum is rotated into various positions for emptying, filling and closing under the control of switches 232, 234, 236 operated mechanically or without contact by members 232<SP>1</SP>, 234<SP>1</SP>, 236<SP>1</SP> on the face of the drum wheel. Switch 236 is actuated by member 236<SP>1</SP> to stop the drum with the opening uppermost for filling of the drum. As the drum is then rotated, the flap 180 falls into the closed position and switch 234 is actuated so that the levers 208 act on the locking levers 196 and hence the closing levers 190 so that they engage the pins 202 on the flap. When a drum is initially loaded into the control device, it is rotated to a position in which the switch 232 is actuated and pivoted stops 238 are rocked to engage the locking levers and release the closing levers from the pins 202 so that the flap falls open and the articles and treating medium fall onto a sieve 28.
