Abstract

1397168 Matrix displays BENDIX CORP 13 Sept 1973 [18 Sept 1972] 43093/73 Heading G5C A display panel comprises an enclosure contaming a coloured fluid, a flexible porous membrane of contrasting colour and means for deflecting the membrane to touch a window of the enclosure thereby displacing fluid and producing a display. The panel includes a permanently magnetized membrane and a ferromagnetic base 14 carrying a matrix of coil pairs 28, 30. The coils 28, 30 are connected respectively in rows and columns. Initially the base is uniformly magnetized with a polarity to attract the membrane. Current is applied to selected rows and columns and only at their intersections is the resultant flux sufficient to reverse the polarity of the base which then repels the adjacent portion of the membrane and urges it against the window. The coils may be replaced by conductor loops 202, 204. In other embodiments rows of coils are arranged to form a seven-bar figureof-eight array or a plurality of complete numerals overlying each other. Grey scales and multicoloured effects can be achieved with a plurality of cells forming each display element. Fluorescent material may be included.
