Abstract

1450530 Matrix displays H P A SALAM 18 Oct 1973 [18 Oct 1972 30 Oct 1972] 48029/72 and 49877/72 Heading G5C Display apparatus comprises a vertically arranged panel formed with a plurality of cells each with an opaque wall 1 with a transparent area 1a, an opaque ferromagnetic shutter 3 symmetrical about a vertical axis which rolls horizontally between two positions, in one of which the window is blocked; and electromagnetic means for causing the shutter to move. The rear and side walls 5, 5a are transparent and the areas 1a covered by light diffusers 3 moved by a travelling magnet system including a vertical array of electromagnets 4 each moving along a row of cells. The assembly moves across the panel to position all the shutters in a similar position and returns to move selected shutters. Alternatively the panel is moved past a stationary assembly. To urge the shutters towards the wall 1 either the floor 2 of each cell slopes down towards the wall or a magnet is arranged in the wall. To ensure that the shutter is stable in either position the floor has a ridge 2a or magnets are placed in end walls 5a. In other embodiments spheres move in tubular cells and cover semicircular apertures also cylinders cover rectangular windows.
