Abstract

1397085 Chucks; vices PEARSON INTERNATIONAL Ltd 19 May 1972 [24 May 1971 26 Nov 1971 3 Feb 1972] 16589/71 55063/71 and 5148/72 Heading B3B [Also in Divisions F2 and G1] A pressure transmitting device (e.g. a vice, Fig. 5; expandable mandrel, Fig. 8; or chuck, Fig. 9), comprises a wall 28, 10, 203 (e.g. of metal) rendered flexible by slots 12, 205, forming a boundary of a chamber 27 containing a resiliently deformable solid 29, 14, 209 (e.g. polyurethane may be with a flexible membrane 28 to prevent extrusion into the slots) and means capable of either applying pressure to the solid to cause, or responding to pressure in the solid resulting from, displacement of the slit wall. The means capable of applying pressure may comprise a piston 31, 116, 210 movable by rotation of either a screwed rod 32 in a screwed bore 33, or a nut 117, 214 acting via a bearing 118, 215. In a modified chuck, Fig. 12, not shown, pressure is applied to the piston via a further body (234) of resiliently deformable solid by rotating a plug (233). A sleeve 120 on the expandable mandrel or a screwed rod 222 in the chuck may be used to locate a part before clamping. Adapter sleeves 218 may be keyed at 219 to the chuck. To mount larger bores on the mandrel, larger split sleeves may be slid over the wall 10.
