Abstract

1397047 Modulating light COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE 19 March 1973 [31 March 1972] 13068/73 Heading H4F A homotropic alignment is imposed on a layer of a mesophase between two walls by depositing on the walls a thin crystalline or liquid crystalline film wherein elongate molecules are disposed in parallel planes and oriented transversely to those planes, i.e. a smectic phase or a solid material with layers having the molecular alignment of a smectic phase. As particularly described a crystalline smectic material with A phase (molecules at 90 degrees to the wall) or C phase (molecules inclined to the normal to the wall) alignment forms the film and is deposited by vacuum evaporation to 500 Š. The mesophase layer may be nematic, e.g. p-methoxybenzylidene p-n-butylaniline, 50 Á thick, or a mixture of mesophases, e.g. cholesteric and nematic. The aligned phase may form part of an electro-optic cell, e.g. showing variable birefringence and disposed between polarizers for a colour filter or in a light beam addressing device as in Specification 1,383,969. Use of a magnetic field is also referred to.
