Abstract
1396880 Making thrust washers VANDERVELL PRODUCTS Ltd 9 March 1973 [9 Dec 1971] 57303/71 Heading B3A [Also in Division F2] A method of making a thrust washer from a flat strip of bearing material comprises the steps of rendering the strip tapered in cross-section, and then curving it in the plane of the strip into arcuate form, the thinner edge forming the inner edge of the arcuate strip, and the thickening of the inner edge which occurs on bending leaving a residual taper towards the inner edge. Fig. 2 shows a radial section through the finished washer comprising a steel back 11 and a bearing layer 12 of aluminium-tin, tin-based babbit, or lead-bronze. The back face 13 of the washer lies in a plane before and after bending. The taper may be up to 2 degrees, preferably 20 to 30 minutes. The strip may be tapered by rolling and parted into lengths each of which is then bent to semi-circular form. Alternatively, the tapered strip may be helically coiled under tension on to a mandrel, and required lengths parted off. Circular washers may be formed with abutting edges or clinch joints. The washer may have a coating of polymer-based bearing material, and further layers may be applied by spraying or electrodeposition. A locating projection may be pressed out of the edge of the strip after bending.
