Abstract

1396827 Aerials J BEAM ENG Ltd 13 April 1973 17846/73 Heading H4A An aerial array for operation within the frequency range 0À3 to 30 GHz comprises a reflector, an active aerial which is resonant in the fundamental mode within that frequency range, a longitudinally extending support having one or more directors mounted thereupon, and a balun substantially collinear with a line passing through said director or directors. The balun comprises a core and an encircling tubular member having a pair of diametrically opposed slots extending from one end thereof to form a pair of furcations in said tube. Respective feed points of the active aerial are connected to the furcations, the core being connected to the tube at one of said feed points. As described, an active aerial 14 is of the skeleton slot type similar to that described in Specification 1,130,007, although a simple dipole may be used instead. The aerial is supported at the end of a split-tube type balun 18, and a reflector 20 is carried on a sleeve which is adjustable along the balun. The reflector consists of a disc of insulating material which is metallized on the side facing the active aerial. A support 10 carries a plurality of directors 12 and is arranged with one end near to, but not touching the active aerial. A fibreglass shroud 26 surrounds the array and the other end of the support 10 is screwed to the closed end thereof. A transverse rod 28 passes through the support 10 and fits into the shroud thereby holding said support rigidly in place. The rod 28 is preferably fixed to the shroud by screws. The inner core and outer tube of the balun 18 are extended beyond the reflector 20 into a housing member which fits into the end of the shroud 26, and they are terminated in a coaxial cable connector (Fig. 3, not shown). During assembly. the position of the active aerial relative to the end director 16 is adjusted by moving the housing member until optimum results are obtained, when it is fixed to the shroud by a screw.
