Abstract
1396700 Heat treatment furnaces; walls BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO Ltd 19 June 1972 [19 June 1971 8 April 1972] 28855/71 and 16315/72 Heading F4B [Also in Division C7] Springs are heat-treated by conveying them along a cylindrical chamber around which are located radiant heating units, the chamber preferably comprising two or more zones, in the first of which the spring is rapidly heated to a temperature near to that desired, followed by slower heating in a second zone to final temperature. Suitable apparatus includes a pair of belt conveyers 114 extending through a cylindrical chamber 112 heated by three groups each of four units 130 controlled by thermocouples. The chamber is enclosed in an outer housing 131 packed with thermal insulation. In a further embodiment the heating chamber is formed by cast refractory blocks 138 having dovetail channels 140 in which are mounted arcuate heating elements 142. Typically springs are heated to 260‹ C. to relieve stresses introduced during cooling, the heat treatment apparatus being incorporated in an automatic production line.
