Abstract

1396640 Fastener driving tools SIGNODE CORP 27 Sept 1973 [20 Nov 1972] 45331/73 Heading B4C A tool for driving nails or staples comprises a housing 11 and a cylinder 12 defining a return chamber 16, a valve 27 for the introduction and exhaust of pressurized gas to and from the cylinder, there being passageways and ports 28, 18, 20 with a non-return valve 103 in the piston and cylinder for allowing the gas in the cylinder to pass to the underside of the piston when this is in its driven position for returning the piston. The valve 27 as shown is in the form of a diaphragm valve which is normally pressed down on the upper rim of the cylinder by a spring 82 and the pressurized air in the chamber 15 acting on the larger upper surface of the diaphragm valve through a conduit 79. When the trigger 94 is pulled to close the inlet 90 to the conduit and allow the chamber 70 above the diaphragm valve to exhaust through a pin passageway 92, the diaphragm valve lifts to permit the pressurized air to enter the cylinder and drive the piston and a fastener from a magazine 37; in its lifted position an exhaust passage 68 through the valve is closed by a resilient pad 75. Upon reaching the driven position, Fig. 4, the driving air passes through the piston passageway 28 and O-ring non-return valve 103 and through cylinder ports 20 into the chamber 16. The release of the trigger re-seats the diaphragm valve and opens the exhaust passage 68 to vent the cylinder to atmosphere through a port 80, the drop in pressure causing the non-return valve 103 to reseat. The pressurized air in the chamber 16 then expands through the cylinder ports 18 into the space under the piston to return the piston. To vent the air used to return the piston, Fig. 5, an O-ring non-return valve 104 expands under the air pressure into a recess 102 at the top of the cylinder to allow the air to pass through piston passageway 97 and exhaust passage 68. In an alternative arrangement, the non-return valve 103 may be placed within the cylinder port 20 instead of in the piston passageway 28.
