Abstract

1396612 Titanium tetrachloride; titanium dioxide LAPORTE INDUSTRIES Ltd 8 Jan 1973 [20 Jan 1972] 2724/72 Headings C1A and C1N Titanium tetrachloride is made by thermally treating a titanium-bearing ore (e.g. ilmenite) with carbon in a reactor 10 and passing the pretreated ore to a leacher 11 wherein it is treated with HCl. The effluent from leacher 11 is recycled via an acid-recovery unit 12 from which solid oxide is removed through a valve 14 whilst the benificiated ore is reacted with chlorine in a chlorinator 15. The gaseous chlorination products are passed to a purification plant 16 and the resulting liquid titanium tetrachloride is passed to an oxidation reactor 18. Titanium dioxide from the reactor 18 is recovered in a condensation zone 20. Waste gases from the purification zone 16 together with waste gases from the oxidation reactor 18 are passed to a scrubber 20 the effluent from which together with waste from solid chlorides from the purification plant 16 are combined in a zone 17. The resulting slurry is passed to a filtration unit 21, the recovered solids from which are returned to the chlorinator 15. Recovered liquid, containing soluble chlorides, from the filtration unit 21 is combined with effluent from the leacher 11 and passed to the acid recovery unit 12.
