Abstract
1396607 Purifying I C engine exhaust gases M B CULP 3 June 1972 26012/72 Heading F1B An afterburner 18 comprises electric heating coils 26a to 26e, an igniter 27 connected to the secondary windings (35), Fig.3 (not shown), of an induction coil 15, baffle plates 24 and 25 mounted adjacent the exhaust gas inlet 22 and outlet 23 and an inlet connected to a source 14 of compressed air. The primary windings (36) (Fig.3), of the coil 15 are connected to a current source (32) through contacts (37, 39) in parallel with a capacitor. One contact (37) is spring- biased into engagement with the other (39) and is drawn by the core (34) of the coil 15 to open the contacts when the primary windings are energized to thereby provide sparks at the igniter electrodes 30, 31. The source 14 may be a compressor providing a pressure of approximately 25 p.s.i. The afterburner is formed of a ceramic, e.g. porcelain, and covered with a heat-resistant material.
