Abstract
1396372 Explosive compositions DYNAMIT NOBEL AG 3 Aug 1972 [7 Aug 1971] 36382/72 Heading C1D A shaped explosive charge body comprises a mixture of ammonium nitrate or perchlorate, or a nitrate or perchlorate of an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal, and 2-50% by weight of a water-soluble polyalcohol or a water-swellable polysaccharide. The charge is free from liquid nitric ester and is prepared without addition of water. Suitable polyalcohols are glycol, glycerine, polyvinyl alcohol, and polyethylene glycol and suitable polysaccharides are potato starch, maize starch, and partial hydrolysis products of starches. From 30-90% by weight of TNT, hexogen, octogen, PETN, or tetryl may be included in the composition. The charge may be used as an initiator or booster for an explosive used in underwater seismic measurement, the charge disintegrating in water and becoming harmless after a time which may be varied by altering the density of the charge.
