Abstract

1396309 Automatic control of temperature and force INTERNATIONAL RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT CO Ltd 7 Aug 1972 [13 May 1971] 14757/71 Heading G3R [Also in Division H2] In a brushgear arrangement in a dynamoelectric machine, a motor 25 drives a jacking screw 22 via gearing 24 to advance a fibre brush 20 [Division H2] against a rotating slip-ring 21 as the brush wears away in use thereof, the motor being driven by a relay unit 26 and control circuit 30 in accordance with the temperature of the brush as sensed by a thermocouple 29. In an over-riding arrangement for controlling the relay unit 26, the brush 20 and an auxiliary, solid type, brush 27 running on an unused part of the slip-ring are both connected to a voltage control unit 28 whereby to sense the contact potential of the main brush 20, and to ensure that it does not go outside permitted limits. The brush position may also be controlled by sensing the contact pressure or contact friction (no details provided).
