Abstract

1395930 Centrifugal compressors GENERAL ELECTRIC CO 9 Aug 1972 [24 Aug 1971] 37091/72 Heading F1C A diffuser for a centrifugal compressor comprises circumferentially spaced passages 34 extending in a generally radially outward direction through an annular 30, the passages being of circular or other curvilinear cross-section over most of their length and altering to a rectangular crosssection over a short transition region at their outer ends. The transition region is bounded by convergent fusto-conical surfaces 48, 48' which are scalloped as shown, fusto-conical discs 50, 50' being attached, as by brazing, to the surfaces 48, 48', the outer edges 52, 52' of the discs 50, 50' co-operating with axial edges 40 to define the rectangular exit cross-section. The transition portions 46 of the passages 34 may be of substantially constant cross-sectional area, the initial portions 44 of circular cross-section increasing in cross-sectional area to provide the diffusion. The centre lines 47 of the passages 34 may be curved and may be inclined at an angle to the transverse radial plane.
