Abstract

1395699 Mounting rear-view mirrors; mounting sun-visors SURREY STEEL COMPONENTS Ltd and J. S. CONN 30 Jan 1973 [21 Dec 1971] 59412/71 Heading B7J [Also in Division E2] An article such as a rear-view mirror is mounted on a vehicle by means comprising a mounting portion 10, Figs. 1 and 3, adhesively securable to the vehicle and having aligned channels 35, 36 therein, and a carrier portion 21, Figs. 4 and 5, connectible to the mirror at a ball 23 and also having a channel 26 therein defined by lugs 25 so that when the carrier portion 21 is arranged on the mounting portion 10, the lugs 25 and channels 35, 36 are in registration and channel 26 receives a resilient locking member 28, Fig. 8, thus locking the portions together. Channel 26 and further channels 16 and 19 in portion 10 have V-shaped grooves 17, 20 and 27 along each side wall and thus are of decreasing cross-section towards the mouth of each channel to normally retain the locking member 28 therein. When the portion 21 or mirror thereon receives a severe blow in an accident, the resilient member 28 is pulled out of the mouths of channels 16 and 19, or out of the mouth of channel 26, so as to release the portions 10 and 21 from one another. The member 28 is of hexagonal cross-section cooperating with the V-shaped grooves 17, 20 and 27 and has a slot 34 therethrough to enhance its resilience. The member 28 may be connected to portion 10, and the shape of the channels 16, 19, 26 and member 28 may be chosen so that the member tends to remain in a selected one of the portions 10 and 21 on break-away. Such mounting means may be used to mount other articles such as sun-visors or ash trays on a vehicle.
