Abstract

1395673 Electro-chemical analysis TECHNICON INSTRUMENTS CORP 9 April 1973 [10 April 1972] 17008/73 Heading G1N In the potentiometric analysis of a fluid sample in which the sample contacts an ion-selective electrode the sample is in the form of a fluid stream with sample segments separated from each other by segments of gas. In order to detect sodium in blood sera or plasma a sample stream flows through tube 10 to conduit 14 where it is diluted with an appropriate buffer solution from conduit 18, segmented by pressurized air 22 and thence through a mixing coil to a heating bath where it is heated to 40 ‹C-50‹C. The heated sample then passes through a combined sodium ion selective electrode/reference electrode system of the type shown in Specification 1395672. The outputs from the sodium selective and reference electrodes are connected to a differential amplifier the output of which is proportional to sodium activity and hence ion concentration. Heating of the electrode speeds the response of the electrode. The electrode may be conditioned by first contacting it with a solution contacting it with a solution containing blood protein and the ions present in blood to which the electrode will respond, and the electrode is then immediately contacted with the sample. The samples may be separated by a wash solution in addition to the gas segments.
