Abstract
1395538 Pin mills; comminuting apparatus J R KAELIN 15 June 1972 28128/72 Heading B2A A disintegrator for domestic refuse comprises a container having a removable cover and housing a pin mill, the pins of which are parallel to the axis of rotation of the mill, the material flow through the mill being radially inwards and the mill compartment tapering towards a central outlet. Material enters via a feed wheel 10 to fall on a cone 5, rotatable in either direction, on which is is thrown against hammers 11 suspended from a cover 4 raisable by rams 36. The cone forms the rotating portion of the pin mill and at its periphery carries blades 12 which urge the partially disintegrated material radially inwards through the mill where it is further reduced by toothed pins 13, 20, 21, the pins 20, 21 being rotatable. Elements 14, raisable by means 15, force sufficiently reduced material through a fixed sieving cylinder 17 where an element 18 sweeps it towards a discharge wheel 19. Spiked plates, e.g. 5a, 102, line the mill where shown, to assist disintegration. Material which cannot be reduced prior to entering the mill may be removed by magnets or otherwise (not specified). Material not passing through the sieve 17 is discharged by lowering the sieve as a unit so that this material slides down the conical mill floor and falls into the seive from above. The sieve is then tilted, Fig 5, (not shown), to tip the material into means for removing it from the site. The cover includes explosion flaps 31 and hot air inlet nozzles 34 and gas removal means through an outlet 35 may be provided. The air may be monitored for temperature and moisture by a control 104 and also for explosive potential. Infra red heating means 38 may be arranged in the mill. The apparatus may be combined with a fabric, cord etc. cutting device, advantageously provided on the inlet funnel 105, Fig 1. The device comprises one or more stationary gratings 41, Figs 3, 4, traversed each by a rotatable knife 42 to shear fabric etc. in co-operation with the grating upper surface.
