Abstract

139,530. Fessenden, R. A. Aug. 16, 1917, [Convention date]. Audible signals; locating sounds; subaqueous sound signals.-Apparatus for the transmission and reception of acoustic waves, described as particularly for directional signalling, and for the location of submarines and submarine signalling- stations, but stated to be applicable also to locating aeroplanes, comprises sound signalling-mechanism placed in liquid in a tank the walls of which are arranged to have the same refractive index for sound as that of the medium outside the tank. Two sound-detectors placed in liquid in a tank are independently connected electrically to two indicators. The receivers may be separated by a sound screen producing the same shadow with relation to the detectors as the human head produces with relation to the ears. As shown, two detectors 11, 12, which may be microphones, stethoscopes, or electro-magnetic receivers, but are preferably oscillators of the kind described in Specification 18765/13, are separated by a soundinsulating screen 13 with an extension 14, the shape of which is determined by experiment. The detectors are placed in a tank, or adjacent tanks, containing oil or water, extending across a ship and separated from the bow and stern by air chambers. The detectors and screen are rotatable about a pivot 29. The detectors are independently connected to telephone receivers 26, 27 on a head-piece through circuits each including a switch 34, 35, adjustable capacity 22, 23, and inductanca 24, 25 by which phase-difference may be adjusted. To give the walls of the tank the same refractive index as the water outside, they are loaded with weights 40 of lead, tungsten, zinc, tin, tin alloyed with lead, or other material, or plates may be used having punched holes filled with lead or brass. The distance between the weights should not exceed a quarter wave-length of the sound to be received. The distance between the detectors should bear the same ratio to the distance between the human ears as the velocity of sound in the medium in the tank bears to the velocity of sound in air.
