Abstract
1395080 Agitating liquids COULTER ELECTRONICS INC 10 Oct 1972 [14 Oct 1971] 46661/72 Heading B1C In automatic chemical analysis, tubes 12 containing samples 16 to be agitated are moved successively by a conveyor 14 to a station below a cylinder 18 having top and bottom ports 21, 30 connectable through a valve 24 to a pressure air source 26 and a vent 34. A free piston 36 carries a hollow probe 38. In the inoperative position the piston may be retained at the top of the cylinder by adhesion of magnetic elements 20, 52. Admission of pressure air to port 21 while port 30 is vented lowers the probe 38 into the tube 12 while air passes through the probe to agitate the sample 16. The port 21 is then closed and pressure air admitted to port 30, raising the probe 38 out of the tube 12. Air in the cylinder is expelled through the probe, purging it, while its outside is dried by air from part 30 passing through chamber 48 and through the clearance 50. The valve 24 and conveyor 14 are controlled in synchronism by a programming device 54. The magnetic material of plug 20 and disc 52 may be rubber mixed with powdered iron.
