Abstract

1395010 Coated calcium hypochlorite UNILEVER Ltd 24 May 1972 [28 May 1971] 17783/71 Heading C1A [Also in Division C5] Particulate alkaline earth metal hypochlorite of particle size 0À3 mm. to 3.0 mm. for inclusion in detergent compositions is coated by forming a horizontal, annular rotating bed in a vessel such that the particles of the bed move relative to each other and the vessel and feeding a film forming material which is soluble or dispersible in an aqueous alkaline medium above 40‹ C. to the bed in the form of a solution, suspension or melt in an amount sufficient for the product to contain at least 15% by weight of the film forming material. The particulate material may be calcium hypochlorite which may be coated with hydrocarbon waxes, saturated triglyceride fats, saturated hydrocarbons, soap or full or half esters of phthalic acid containing at least one alkyl group of at least ten carbon atoms, the coated particles being added to a detergent comprising Tergitol 15-5-9 (Registered Trade Mark), hydrated sodium silicate, sodium stearate, hydrated silicate, sodium stearate, hydrated sodium sulphate and hydrated sodium tripolyphosphate. Two or more layers of coating material may be applied to the hypochlorite particles, e.g. octadecyl hydrogen phthalate coating followed by a final coating of soap. A flow aid, e.g. silica, talc, aluminosilicate or diatomaceous earth may be added to the bed during the coating step.
