Abstract
1393680 Extruding porous pipe UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY 8 Nov 1972 [23 Nov 1971] 54432/71 Heading B5A [Also in Divisions C3 and B1] Extruded articles, e.g. tubes, consist of porous rigid ployvinylchloride, a copolymer of at least 90 molar per cent of vinyl chloride with a copolymerizable ethylenically unsaturated monomer or a blend of polyvinyl chloride with a vinyl chloride copolymer which blend contains at least 90 molar per cent of vinyl chloride units, the polymer being unplasticized, having an apparent density of 0À5-1À3 g./cc., an average pore diameter of 5-500 Á and at least 50% of the pores being interconnected. The porous polymers are made by extruding a mixture of the powdered polymer with 0À5 -3À0% by wt. of a chemical blowing agent, less than 10% by wt. of a stabilizer for the polymer and not more than 12% by wt. of a filler. The tube may be axially drawn when hot so as to reduce its diameter or may be drawn hot over a mechanical former so as to increase its porosity by radial expansion of the tube.
