Abstract

1393658 Finishing fabric edges PARKSCRAMER CO 23 Aug 1973 [23 Aug 1972 21 Aug 1973] 40082/73 Heading D1S The edge of a moving, tensioned fabric is severed and a ravel resistant edge formed thereon by directing a heated gas thereon as the fabric is guided from a fabric forming location. In the embodiment shown, Fig 4, fabric F from a shuttleless loom is severed and sealed adjacent, but spaced from, a longitudinal side edge thereof by a device 15 mounted by a bracket (26), Fig 3 (not shown), to the breast bean (11) of the loom. The device 15 is supplied with compressed air through a conduit 16 and comprises a thermally insulating casing 18 containing an electrical resistance fluid heater 19 having resistance wires 20 supplied with electrical current through leads 21, 22. The heated air is directed by a nozzle 24 to impinge on the fabric at 90‹ to the path of movement thereof. The fabric is supported by a plate 25 having an opening therethrough for the passage of the air stream. The air is heated to at least 500‹F and impinges on the fabric at a velocity of at least 6,000 feet per minute. Severing is effected by softening or thermal degradation of the yarns. Specified fabrics contain cotton, polyester, nylon or polypropylene yarns, e.g. a light weight shirting having polyester warp and weft yarns or chamlbrey fabric having a cotton weft and a polyester/cotton warp with 100% polyester warp yarns at one side edge for assured sealing. In modifications (both not shown) the device 15 is applied to a knitting machine or a tenter frame instead of to a shuttleless loom.
