Abstract
1393399 Cranks; ecceritrics; crankshafts EXXON RESEARCH & ENG CO 1 June 1972 25703/72 Headings F2K and F2U In a built-up crank-shaft, having one or more crank assemblies, a hollow crank-pin 11 is compressively clamped between adjacent crankshaft cheeks 13, 14 in recessed portions 12 thereof, by a tensile bolt, or stud, 19 fitted through the hollow crank-pin and bores 20, 21 in the adjacent crank-shaft cheeks to provide a rigid assembly, As shown, a nut is screwed on the bolt 19 to compressively clamp the assembly, the bolt head 39 and/or nut 40 being located in a recess in each crank cheek to minimize the overall axial length of the crank assembly, In Fig. 1 (not shown), the bolt is replaced by a hollow stud having clamping nuts screwed on at each end, whilst in Fig. 3 (not shown), a stud screwed directly (at 52) into one crank-shaft cheek 13 is hydraulically pretensioned before lightly tightening (i.e. finger tight), a clamping nut (54) whereafter the hydraulic tensioning force is released leaving the stud 19 at the required tension. Distribution of lubricant in service is effected by oil ducts 43, 44 in bearing 41, 42 and oil ways 25 via apertures 20, 21, 22 to oilways 28 in the crank-pin 11, and balance weights 15, 16 are attached to the cheeks 13, 14. In Fig. 1 (not shown) the hollow crank-pin 11 is eccentric to its bore 22, the connecting rods (31, 32), of pairs of pistons (not shown) disposed at right angles relative to each other, being journalled on a double eccentric sleeve the eccentrics (29, 30) of which are angularly disposed 180 degrees apart, the double eccentric sleeve being journalled on the crank-pin.
