Abstract

1393104 Impregnated fibre bundle; yams OWENS-CORNING FIBERGLAS CORP 9 March 1972 [9 March 1971] 11095/72 Headings D1P D1R and D1W [Also in Division B2] A reinforcement for elastomeric material comprises a bundle of fibres having a coating of, and/or impregnated with, an elastomer compatible material and a vulcanisation or cure retarder which is acidic and capable of reacting with low molecular weight components of the elastomer compatible material thereby preventing said components from migrating from the coating or impregnant and is selected from N-nitrosoamines having boiling point greater than 200‹C, carboxylic acids and anhydrides or acid halides having a boiling point greater than 200‹C and cobalt amines. The term "fibre bundle" is defined as meaning a strand, yarn or cord formed from a plurality of filaments, woven or non-woven fabric formed from fibres in the form of cords, or any arrangement, woven or non-woven, of fibres or filaments. The term "elastomer" includes natural rubber and synthetic rubbers such as butadiene-styrene copolymer, butadiene-acrylonitrile copolymer, polychloroprene, polyisoprene, polyneoprene, isobutyl rubber, inter-polymers of ethylene, propylene, and a polyene such as dicyclopentadiene, 1, 4-hexadiene and preferably an alkylene and alkylidene norbornene such as 5-alkylidene-2- norbornene, and polysulfone rubber. The reinforcement may be used in belt manufacture, rubber tyres. A fibre-reinforced elastomer product is produced by combining the reinforcement with an elastomeric material and moulding the resulting combination under heat and pressure so that a uniform rate of vulcanisation or cure is achieved throughout the reinforced elastomeric product. The vulcanisation retarder is said to moderate the rate of vulcanisation and/or cure of the elastomeric material immediately adjacent to the fibre bundle with the result that a more uniform rate of vulcanisation and/or cure takes place throughout the fibre bundle elastomeric composite. The fibres may be metal, polyester, nylon, rayon, glass. Examples of specific retarders are given. The retarder may be present in the form of a thin coating on the impregnated or coated bundle, or the retarder may be admixed with the elastomer compatible material. The elastomer compatible material may be a mixture of an elastomer latex with an amine--modified resorcinol aldehyde resin, a butadiene-styrene-vinyl pyridene terpolymer, a urea-aldehyde resin, a melamine-aldehyde resin, a polyester, a polyamide or a polyepoxide. The retarder may be present in amount 0.1-25% by weight based on the weight of the elastomer compatible material in the bundle. The impregnating or coating composition may also include an anchoring agent in the form of an organo silicon compound which serves to anchor the fibres more securely to elastomeric materials. In an Example a strand of glass fibres is passed through a bath containing a natural rubber latex and resorcinol formaldehyde resin, and through a roller to remove excess impregnating composition, dried and then coated with a solution of a retarder by roller coating. The retarder solution comprises a solution of N-nitroso diphenylamine dissolved in acetone.
