Abstract

1486746 Yarns. Improving adhesion to rubber TORAY INDUSTRIES INC 3 Feb 1976 04205/76 Headings D1P and D1W Yarns (or cords formed by intertwisting two such yarns e.g. with twist factor of 100- 800) for reinforcing rubber articles such as industrial belts, hoses and tyres, have overall denier of 500-4000, twist factor of 20-200, comprise carbon filaments (with individual denier of 0.4-2.0) and are impregnated e.g. up to 10% by weight of filament, with a resorcinol - formaldehyde elastomer, the application of which may be preceded by impregnating with a (water-soluble) epoxy resin e.g. to 0.5-10% by weight of the filaments. Impregnation may be effected by dipping e.g. in a resorcinol-formaldehyde latex (of one or more rubbers such as natural rubber, polychloroprene, polybutadiene, styrene-butadiene copolymer, or vinylpyridine-styrene-butadiene terpolymer). The epoxy resins have at least one epoxy group, and may comprise a reaction product of a di- or poly -hydroxy alcohol or di-or poly-hydroxy phenol with epichlorohydrin treated with alkali. Examples of alcohols include ethylene, diethylene, polyethylene, propylene, polypropylene, butalene and neopentylene glycol, glycerin diglycerin, polyvinyl alcohol, inositol, sorbitol, pentaerythritol, trimethyl propane and 1, 4- dimethylol-benzene. Examples of phenols include resorcinol, hydroquinone, bisphenol A, phloroglucinol and catechol.
