1392434 Packaging article T A CHADWICK 11 April 1972 [15 April 1971] 9479/71 Heading B8C Articles to be packaged in the compartments of multi-compartment trays are supported at a dropping station on a rectilinearly reciprocable means which is then moved out of the path of free fall of the article sufficiently quickly to enable the article to fall freely into a compartment of a tray positioned at the dropping station without the article tilting as it falls. As shown, a chocolate 14 which has to be dropped into a cavity 16 in a tray 18, is fed along a channel 22 and is then supported on a flat shutter 12 above the tray which is carried on a continuously or intermittently moving conveyer. When the cavity is aligned with the shutter 12, the latter is quickly moved by for example an air cylinder, from under the chocolate which falls into the cavity 16. Several channels and shutters may be combined in a single device to place individual shapes in corresponding cavities.
