Abstract
1392353 Gas-diffusion electrode ZLEHIT PRI BAN 11 April 1972 16708/72 Heading H1B A gas-diffusion electrode for a fuel or metal-air cell comprises a metal grid supporting, in order, a porous gas-permeable hydrophobic layer of electrically-conductive material and a porous, hydrophilic catalyst layer of electrically-conductive material which faces the electrolyte in the cell. The hydrophobic and hydrophilic layers interpenetrate at their interface, the ratio between the two layers varying across the thickness of the electrode such that in the direction towards the electrolyte the hydrophobic layer decreases and the hydrophilic layer increases. In one embodiment the hydrophobic layer consists of carbon black wet-proofed with a polymer, e.g. PTFE, polyisobutylene, polyethylene or polypropylene, and the hydrophilic layer consists of activated carbon.
