Abstract
1392096 Staircase wave generators FERRANTI Ltd 26 July 1973 [29 July 1972] 35609/72 Heading H3T [Also in Division G3] A monolithic integrated circuit for controlling the energization of an alternator field winding includes a cyclic staircase waveform generator and a voltage comparator. As shown, the rectified output voltage of an alternator 11 is used to charge a battery 13 and is sensed by a lead containing a variable resistor 26 connected to a differential amplifier 25 in an integrated circuit 41. The other input of the amplifier 25 receives a cyclic staircase waveform 31, Fig. 2, produced by an oscillator 21, frequency divider 22, five-bit binary counter 23 and ladder network 24. At the cross-over points of the waveform 31 and the sensed output voltage 34, the amplifier 25 switches to produce pulses 37 which turn transistor 27 on and off, the mean current in field winding 16 being determined by the width of pulses 37 so that the alternator output voltage is regulated. The -generation of the staircase waveform requires only a very small capacitance to be provided in the integrated circuit.
