Abstract

1392047 Stuffing-boxes BRITISH HYDRO-MECHANICS RESEARCH ASSOCIATION 19 Dec 1972 [21 Dec 1971 1 Sept 1972] 37255/73 and 37958/73 Divided out of 1392046 Heading F2B A pump or other shaft 3 is sealed by means comprising a packing sleeve 4 mounted within a carrier 12 comprising a tubular part 13, an inwardly directed abutment flange 14 at its inner end and an outwardly directed flange 15 at its outer end secured through resilient sealing means, e.g. gasket 16, to the end of a housing sleeve 1, e.g. by nuts 17A or studs 18, for a gland 2 which compresses the sleeve in the carrier. In a modification. Fig. 2 (not shown), the carrier is secured to the sleeve (1) by a dished retainer ring (19) interposed between the stud (18) and the flange 15. In another modification, Fig. 4 (not shown), the flange (15) has a frusto-conical rim (15A) that abuts and is deformed by the gland 2 on tightening. As shown in Fig. 7, the carrier may be mounted in a clamping ring 21 to project outwardly of the stuffing-box. The packing sleeve 4 may be urged against the shaft by a loading medium supplied from a pressure source, e.g. a grease nipple 6A, through a duct 6 in the casing. Fig. 8, the gland (2, Fig. 5), or the stuffing-box. The loading medium pressure source may include a differential piston subjected to the pressure of the fluid to be sealed. The carrier may be cooled by circulating coolant around its outer peripheral surface which may be corrguated or finned or the carrier may be multi-balled to form spaces through which coolant may be circulated or which may be filled with insulating material. The sleeve 4 may be formed in two halves 4A, 4B, Fig. 8, surrounded by a wire gauze sleeve. Alternatively, Fig. 9 (not shown), the sleeve may be radially split. As shown in Fig. 11, the sleeve is a bush 4E formed with axial grooves 4F interconnected by two circumferential grooves 4G. The carrier 12 may be of metal or plastics and the gasket 16 may be of rubber, asbestos, plastics or metal.
