1391988 Protecting guards R EZQUERRA 13 April 1972 [14 April 1971] 17047/72 Heading B7B A device for protecting an occupant of a vehicle in the event of a crash comprises an upwardly movable apron 1 of flexible material having a central portion adapted to cover substantially the whole of the facial area of the occupant and lateral branches 2 for attachment to a seat. The apron 1 may include a flap 4 of flexible material secured thereto by a flexible strap 5. The rear ends of the branches 2 are attached by a buckle 6 to a short strap 7 having an anchoring buckle 8. A strap 9 is secured to each strap 7 to permit mounting on the back rest 10 of a seat. The device may have a screen 19, Fig. 6, of flexible transparent material, e.g. of plastic material to preserve visibility. A backrest 21 is interposed between a seat occupant and the back rest 10a to follow their forward movement, return movement being prevented by a movable locking roll 22 and a ratchet 26 co-operating with a keeper 27. An air chamber which permits the entry of air as the back rest 21 moves forward again, but not the exit of air may be interposed between the back rests 21 and 10a to prevent backward movement of the latter. In another embodiment, Figs. 6 to 9 (not shown) the device is arranged to fit on a child's seat secured to a vehicle seat.
