1391679 Heterocyclic sulphur compounds MONSANTO Ltd 19 April 1973 [17 May 1972] 23190/72 Heading C2C Benzo[1,2d; 3,4d; 5,6d]tri - (1,2 - dithiole - 3- thione), and other heterocyclic sulphur compounds containing at least one 1,2-dithiole-3- thione ring fused to a carbocyclic aromatic nucleus are prepared by reacting sulphur with an aromatic halogen compound having a carbocyclic aromatic nucleus containing at least one pair of adjacent functional substituents; one member of the pair being a halogen atom and the other being (i) a group having the formula -C( = Q)R in which Q represents oxygen or sulphur and R represents a hydrogen atom, a mercapto group, a halogen atom or an amino or substituted amino group, or (ii) a group having the formula -CH 2 R<SP>1</SP> in which R<SP>1</SP> represents a halogen atom, a mercapto group, or an amino or substituted amino group. Preferred reaction solvents are N-alkyl-substituted formamide or N-alkyl-substituted acetamide or an alcohol, e.g. C 1 to C 4 alkanol, in the presence of an alkali metal alcoholate. Where the reaction is carried out in an N-alkyl-substituted formamide or acetamide, hydrogen sulphide may be passed continuously into the reaction mixture to minimize the formation of nitrogenous by-products. The preparation of 1,3,5 - tris(dimethylaminomethyl) - 2,4,6- trichloro - benzene used in the preparation of benzo[1,2d; 3,4d; 5,6d]tri - (1,2 - dithiole- 3-thione), is given and comprises reacting 1,3,5- tris(bromomethyl) - 2,4,6 - trichlorobenzene with dimethylamine.
