1391156 Peeling-machines L H LOEFFLER 28 June 1973 [23 May 1973] 30746/73 Heading A4C A device for peeling vegetables and the like comprises a support stand 14 enclosing a motor compartment 16, a substantially fluid-tight outer housing 12 with a side wall 46 and a bottom 48 forming a peeling compartment 54, a driven shaft 50 extending through a seal in the bottom 48 into the motor compartment 16, a driving shaft 36 terminating near the end of driven shaft 50, a clutch 38, 44 providing driving connection between the shafts 50, 36 through clutch teeth 40, 42, whereby the housing 12 may be removed vertically, a stationary peeling-member 64 with an open cylindrical abrading surface mounted in peeling compartment 54, and a rotary peeling- member 60 in compartment 54 near the open bottom of the stationary member 64 and connected to the driven shaft 50, the rotary peeling- member 60 being a dish-shaped element with a bottom wall 61 having an abrading surface and an upwardly and outwardly inclined side wall 63, such that in operation the rotary peeling member 60 tosses vegetables or the like up the inclined side wall 63 into contact with the stationary peeling member 64 whereby they bounce off the stationary peeling member 64 and return to the central area of the rotary peeling member 60. The bottom 26 of the motor compartment 16 rests on suction cups 28, and the motor 18 is mounted at 24. An electrical control 20 with a knob 22 switches the motor on and off and controls its speed and/or operating time, to take account of different kinds of vegetables to be peeled. The motor drives the vertical shaft 36 through gearing 34. The rotary peeling member 60 has an abrading surface which may be formed as the bottom of the member 60, or as a separate disc 61 as shown, clamped to the bottom of the member 60 by a nut 65 on the threaded part of shaft 50, which passes through sealing washers 56, 58 and the bottom of peeling compartment 54, to the clutch element 44. The stationary peeling-member 64 is mounted in compartment 54 removably, so that it may be exchanged for another member with a different kind of abrading surface, or to exchange a worn member for a new one. Member 64 extends only partly up the compartment 54. The housing 12 has a lid 68 with an handle 70, and handles 72 for lifting the housing vertically, the clutch members becoming disengaged. When the housing is returned to its operative position, reengagement of the clutch elements is facilitated by a guiding cylinder 74, which also retains a shockabsorbing elastomeric ring 76, arranged to retain housing 12 in position during operation.
