Abstract

1391111 Deinking printed waste paper VYSKUMNY USTAV PAPIERU A CELULOZY 10 March 1972 [11 March 1971] 11234/72 Heading D2W A method of deinking printed waste paper comprises impregnating the paper with an aqueous solution containing from 0.2-2.0% by wt of a surfactant and 0.5-4.0% by wt of an alkaline substance, pulping the impregnated paper in the presence of 0.5-4.0% by wt of a hydrophobic aromatic or aliphatic hydrocarbon, or a hydroxy derivative thereof, and particles of an adsorptive carrier for ink released by the paper, and thereafter separating the carrier particles carrying ink released by the paper. The hydrophobic aromatic or aliphatic hydrocarbon may be a petroleum product or terpene. The carrier may be a metal soap of a fatty or bituminous acid. The carrier may include a loading material e.g. bentonite, china clay, barytes, gypsum, silica or magnesite. As shown, waste paper may be charged into a pulper 1 by conveyor 18 and the impregnating solution may be added from tank 2. After allowing for impregnation by the solution, the impregnated paper is pulped and the pulp discharged into tank 3. The pulp is then pumped through a separator 5 for removal of heavy contaminants, and a strainer 6 for removal of further residue, before discharge into tank 8 in which it is diluted to an appropriate consistency. The diluted pulp is then pumped through conical vortex separators 10, 13 to remove carrier particles carrying ink, the eluates from the separators being discharged to tank 14 and pumped therefrom to a further conical separator 16. Purified stock from the latter separator is recycled to tank 8. Stock from separator 13 is passed to a separator 21 designed to separate out finer contaminants.
