Abstract

1391065 Self-locking nuts FIRTH CLEVELAND FASTENINGS Ltd 29 March 1972 [29 March 1971] 8019/71 Heading F2H A self-locking nut comprises a cylindrical threaded portion 6 and a recess which serves as a locking portion the recess being of elliptical cross-section which in a first embodiment has a minor axis equal to the diameter of the bore of portion 6 and a major axis greater than the maximum diameter of thread in portion 6. A thread is formed in the locking portion of equal pitch to that in portion 6 but of reduced diameter. Thus tapped 8 and untapped 9 regions are formed and flexing of regions 9, which have relatively thin walls, occurs when a bolt progresses from bearing face 4, the resilience of regions 9 then creating a self-locking action. The threads in region 8, while incomplete are cylindrical and remain so during locking. In a second embodiment, the major axis is less than the outer diameter of portion 6 thereby resulting in regions 9 being tapped but to a lesser depth than in regions 8. In a modification, the minor axis of the locking portion is less than the outer diameter of portion 6 but greater than the inner diameter. Further, the elliptical recess may taper slightly towards a non-bearing face 3.
