Abstract

1391039 Mixing apparatus K G OHLSON 27 March 1973 [28 March 1972] 14528/73 Heading B1C An asphalt mixing plant comprises means for supplying and heating mineral aggregate, means for supplying and heating a binder, a mixer for receiving the heated aggregate and binder, viscosity sensing and control means for sensing the viscosity of the heated binder and controlling the binder heating means in dependence thereon, and means for sensing the temperature of the binder in the binder supply means and for controlling the aggregate supplying and heating means in dependence on the sensed temperature. Bitumen is continuously circulated between tanks 29, 32 in which it is heated by heating means 30, 34, and is supplied therefrom to nozzles 27 in a mixer 23 by a pump 37. The viscosity of the circulating bitumen is measured by a viscosimeter 38, the signals from which are used to control the heaters 30, 34 by controls 35, 36. The temperature of the bitumen in tank 32 is also measured by temperature sensor 40 associated with control means 39; the latter provides control signals to thermostats 43, 37 which respectively control the heating means 41, 45 for different grades of aggregate held in bins 18, 20, 21 arranged to discharge (via a weighing hopper 22) to the mixer. The control means 39 is also connected to a thermostatic control 12 which is arranged to regulate the temperature of aggregate discharged from a rotary drum heater either by controlling the fuel supply to an oil burner 9 in the rotary heating drum or by controlling the feed rate of aggregate which is discharged from hoppers 1, 2, 3 to the heating drum. In use of the apparatus bitumen at the required viscosity is mixed in the mixer with the required quantity of the coarser grade of aggregate supplied at the controlled temperature. The finer grade or grades of aggregate are added subsequently at a lower controlled temperature. Finally filler material may be added, cold, from a hopper 24.
