1390573 N - (α - lminobenzyl)piperazines USV PHARMACEUTICAL CORP 22 May 1973 24231/73 Heading C2C Novel N - (α - iminobenzyl)piperazines of the general formula wherein each of R and R<SP>1</SP> is a hydrogen or halogen atom or a C 1-6 alkyl, C 1-6 alkoxy, hydroxy or trifluoromethyl group, R<SP>11</SP> is a C 1-6 alkyl, C 2-6 alkenyl, C 3-7 cycloalkyl (optionally C 1-6 alkylsubstituted), alkyl-phenyl or phenyl group and R<SP>111</SP> is a hydrogen atom or a C 1-6 alkyl, C 2-6 alkenyl, C 2-6 carboalkoxy, formyl, phenyl, halophenyl, cinnamyl, benzyl, alkoxybenzyl or benzhydryl group, and pharmaceutically acceptable, non-toxic acid addition salts thereof are prepared by reacting together compounds of the general formulae followed optionally by salification of the product. Pharmaceutical compositions having hypoglycemic and, in certain cases, anti-arrhythmic activity comprise, as active ingredient, an N- (α-iminobenzyl)piperazine of the first general formula above or a pharmaceutically acceptable, non-toxic acid addition salt thereof, together with a pharmaceutical carrier.
