Abstract

1390513 Metallic fabrics W R C GIBBS 13 Sept 1972 [15 Sept 1971] 43027/71 Heading D1K [Also in Divisions El F2 and G5] A panel (e.g. a console of an instrument panel) comprises a honeycomb-like structure formed from a plurality of rigid tubular elements 2 of square cross-section having two corners formed with slotted tubes 12 and the other two corners having ribs 16 engaged in the slotted tubes 12 of adjacent elements 2, and tiles 6 each engaged either in the elements 2 or in the spaces 4 therebetween to form the panel's surface. The ribs 16 may have longitudinal bores 18 receiving a screw and nut assembly 32 to prevent relative axial displacement of the elements, the arms 8 of the elements being recessed 38 to accommodate the nut's head. The peripheral holes 4 may be completed on their fourth side by bars having ribs 16 and/or tubes 12 at their ends. The structure may be surrounded by an external trim 40 secured to the floor or wall of a building. Some elements may be omitted to form a hole surrounded by an internal trim in which equipment may be mounted. The tiles have two ribbed legs 28 for frictional engagement with the element's sides and may have designs thereon representing an industrial plant's layout. The tiles and elements are readily interchangeable to facilitate representing any changes in the plant's layout.
