Abstract

1390414 Mixing and emulsifying by sonic and ultrasonic vibrations COMPAGNIE FRANCAISE DE RAFFINAGE 1 Sept 1972 [3 Sept 1971 20 Dec 1971 27 June 1972] 40725/72 Heading B1C A liquid whistle comprises a thin metal (e.g. stainless steel) membrane 1, 10 (Figs. 1, 2 and 4) having a first discontinuity 2, 12 leading to a second discontinuity 3, 13 leaving a portion 4, 14 which acts as a vibrating element and is preferably bevelled. The membrane is secured between side plates 5, 6 having opposed recesses 7, 8 so that the first discontinuity forms the inlet passage, the second discontinuity provides communication between the recesses, and the fluid leaves from one of the recesses through a conduit 9. In the modification of Fig. 6, 21 is the first discontinuity; the second discontinuities 22, 23 are branched and provide two vibratory elements 24, 25 each cooperating with a pair of recesses, see Fig. 7 (not shown). In another embodiment (see Figs. 8-11, not shown), the membrane has a plurality of discontinuities round its periphery similar to those of Fig. 1 and has side plates with corresponding rings of recesses; the rate of flow through the apparatus may be altered and the device adapted for use with various fluids by using membranes of different materials and/or thickness and having different widths and numbers of discontinuities, which may be fewer than the number of pairs of recesses. Typical dimensions and frequencies are given and examples relate to the making of emulsions of water with fuel oil, paraffin wax or microcrystalline wax. The constituent materials may be proportioned, filtered and pre-mixed.
