Abstract
1390179 Supporting articles by air jets UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY 31 Oct 1972 [18 Nov 1971] 53616/71 Heading B8A A variable face cushion of air is provided to support various loads by means of a deflectable supporting table having apertures to receive fixed, upstanding, unyieldable valve members, air being conducted through the stems of the valve members to the apertures in the table and through the apertures when the table is deflected. The force of the air cushion is dependent on the distance by which the table is deflected which in turn is a function of the load. The load is preferably carried on a perforated or foraminous endless belt which is supported above the table by a cushion of air provided as above described, the load in turn being supported by air passing through the belt from the cushion of air supporting the belt. In the figure, table 1 is provided with a plurality of apertures 4, each aperture being provided with an upstanding valve member 8. The table is yieldably supported by springs 3, deflection of the table causing unseating of the valve closure 6 against the seating 5. Duct 10 provides for the conduction of air to the aperture 4, and through the aperture to form an air cushion when the table is deflected under load.
