Abstract

1390079 Polystyrene-block copolymer compositions GENERAL TIRE & RUBBER CO 26 April 1972 19428/72 Heading C3P A composition comprises (a) a polymer of at least 90% styrene having a molecular weight of 50,000 to 500,000, and (b) a "graded" block copolymer of the AB type in which A represents polymerized styrene and B represents polymerized butadiene, the molecular weight of the polymer AB being from 100,000 to 500,000, component (b) being dispersed in (a) as particles at least 70% of which have diameters in the range 0À2 to 5 microns, and the total styrene units in components (a) and (b) being from 75 to 90% of the total units in said components. The "graded" block copolymers contain minor proportions of the other monomer in each block, and may be obtained by a single stage copolymerization using a hydrocarbyl lithium in a suitable hydrocarbon solvent. The blends may be obtained by solution blending and precipitation or by dry milling.
