Abstract

1390028 Bipyridyls IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 7 June 1972 [15 July 1971] 33310/71 Heading C2C [Also in Division C7] 2,2<SP>1</SP>- Bipyridyls are prepared using a nickel catalyst made by aqueous alkali digestion of a nickel-aluminium alloy containing 44-48% aluminium. Pyridine may be percolated through a fixed bed of catalyst at 110‹ C. and the treated material fractionated to give a pyridine distillate and a residue of the bipyridyl which is purified by crystallization from light petroleum. Reference is made to the treatment of pyridine or an alkyl pyridine at temperatures from 50‹ to 150‹ C.
