Abstract

1389687 Rotary cutter heads; cutting tools TH KIESERLING & ALBRECHT 25 April 1972 [10 Aug 1971] 19171/72 Headings B3T and B3B In a method of machining continuous bar or tubular stock in which the stock is fed through a rotary cutter head; at the commencement of the machining operation the rotary speed of the cutter head is continuously reduced and the axial feed of the stock is increased in order to maintain a substantially constant cutting speed and maintain the maximum feed of the stock through the cutter head. A cutter head 2 for effecting the above method comprises a plurality of equally angularly spaced radially displaceable cutters 3 which are turnable about their longitudinal axes extending radially to the cutter head axis by way of a projection 3b engaging in a slot 6a in a toothed ring 6. The ring 6 is connected to an annular member 4 having an internally tapered surface against which the rear ends 3a of the cutter blades 3 engage. The ring 4 is displaceable axially by way of push rods 5 which causes simultaneous turning and radial displacement of the blades. This action permits the machining of different diameter workpieces, the cutting edges 3c of the blades having a curved contour facilitating the accommodation of the different diameter bars.
