Abstract

1389453 Monitoring apparatus; module stack for gas analysis SIEMENS AG 16 May 1972 [17 May 1971 20 Oct 1971] 23027/72 Headings G1B G1J and G1X Apparatus for monitoring environmental conditions comprises a stack of modular units 3-6 each equipped to monitor a respective condition, e.g. solid, liquid, or gaseous atmospheric components or noise level, and including detecting means 15 for a respective condition, evaluating means 16 to evaluate the detected level, and indicating means 18 for external display of the level, the stack including passages for passing air samples to the various units. The units may be secured together by rods 13a engaging threaded sleeves 13c anchored to the ground, or may be slidable into a housing (25), Fig.3 (not shown). The bottom unit 1 provides electrical power for the other units from e.g. a battery, fuel cell, or the public mains supply. The top unit 7 measures and indicates meteorological conditions, and includes a rain water collecting inlet 12. A unit 2 measures and records mechanical vibration, but has no external display. In each air sampling unit. Fig.2, fans G draw atmospheric air through an inlet duct Z and pass it through a detector 15 for a particular pollutant to an outlet duct A. The detector may be an exhaust gas tester, a gas, liquid, or reversion chromatograph, a smoke densimeter, or an X-ray spectrometer. A comparator 16 compares data from the detector 15 with a preset threshold value and passes the data to a store 17 and an indicator 18 having a pointer 20. Green and red lights 9, 10 respectively indicate whether the pollutant level is below or above the threshold value. The threshold value is set on a device 24 in the lamp circuit by an adjustment screw 22 acting via mechanical gearing 23, the set value being indicated by a set pointer 21. The data may be transmitted to a central monitoring station by radio or land line.
