Abstract
1389439 Aryl substituted N paraffins UNIVERSAL OIL PRODUCTS CO 25 July 1972 [26 July 1971] 34694/72 Heading C5E Aryl substituted normal paraffins having the structure wherein R 1 and R 2 are straight chain alkyl groups and the nucleus may be substituted are prepared by (1) contacting a normal paraffin and H 2 with a dehydrogenation catalyst under conditions to produce a normal monoolefin having the same number of C atoms as the precursor paraffin, (ii) contacting the mixture of monoolefin and normal paraffin with an alkylalation catalyst and a monocyclic aromatic to produce a mixture containing an acyl substituted monoolefin (iii) separating the normal paraffin from the mixture and recycling it to the dehydrogenation step (i) ensuring that below 0À1% aryl substituted paraffin is contained in the recycle stream to prevent undue catalyst deactivation. The normal paraffin contains 9 to 20 carbon atoms, the monocyclic aromatic being benzene toluene, xylene, ethyl benzene, methyl ethyl benzene, a phenol, a diethyl benzene or mono-nitrobenzene.
