Abstract

1389366 Bilirubin test paper BOEHRINGER MANNHEIM GmbH 14 Aug 1973 [17 Aug 1972] 38429/73 Heading G1B A "test paper" for the detection of bilirubin in body fluids contains (a) a diazonium salt capable of coupling with bilirubin in the presence of an acid, (b) sufficient acid and (c) a phosphate of formula: wherein R 1 and R 2 are organic groups. The "paper' may be filter paper, glass fibre paper or synthetic fibre fabric or fleece. The diazonium salt may be 2,6-dichloro-benzene diazonium fluoborate, 4- nitro-benzene-diazonium fluoborate, 3-nitrobenzene-diazonium-naphthalene-2-sulphonate, 2-chlorobenzene-diazonium-naphthalene-1,5- disulphonate, 4-fluorobenzene-diazonium-fluoborate, 2,5-dichlorobenzene-diazonium-fluoborate, 2,4-dibromobenzene-diazonium-fluoborate, 2,4,6- trichlorobenzene-diazonium fluoborate, 4-carboxy benzene-diazonium-p-toluene-sulphonate, diazosulphanilic acid, benzedine-bis-diazonium fluoborate, 4-(5-methyl-benzthiazolyl-2)-benzene -diazonium fluoborate and 2-chloro-benzenediazonium fluoborate. The acid may be meta; phosphoric acid, oxalic acid, citric acid or potassium bisulphate. The phosphate is usually one in which R 1 =R 2 . Organic groups specified for R include phenyl, o-tolyl, p-tolyl, 3,5-xylyl-, o-chlorophenyl, p-chlorophenyl, p-nitrophenyl, benzyl, cyclohexyl, pentyl, methyl, ethyl, 2-chloroethyl, 2-butoxyethyl, n-propyl, isopropyl, n-butyl, 2-ethylhexyl, isooctyl, isononyl, isodecyl, dodecyl, isotridecyl. The di-ester may be accompanied by the corresponding mono-ester. The paper may also include a stabilizer, e.g. sodium fluoborate, magnesium sulphate, sodium metaphosphate or an aryl sulphonate, and a wetting agent, e.g. sodium dodecylbenzene sulphonate. The reagents may be applied from solution in water, aqueous methanol, ethyl acetate or chloroform. The paper may be used for urine-testing.
